What is the responsibility of Large Media Institutions for Young People?
There are 2.3 billion social media users currently, a large proportion are young people. As there is so much content available on social media it is vital that young people are safeguarded, and there are restrictions on content that may have any effect on them.
For example on large social media platforms such as Facebook there is the option to be able to flag certain content that offends people. This feature is also available on platforms such as youtube. Youtube also have an age restriction, if you are under 18 (date of birth is required when creating account) you are unable to view certain content. If videos contain any inappropriate content they are removed, and there is a team on platforms such as facebook which are constantly monitoring videos which are posted.
Young people are an easier target for people to manipulate. For example as they are easier to radicalise it is vital that platforms look out for any possible radicalisation. They can do this by having trigger words, which bring content into viewing for further investigation.
There is also an issue that social media is lowering productivity and that many young children are addicted to social media. This addiction can lead to many issues such as unhealthy views on body images. This can occur because children are constantly seeing content of other people at their best, making them question themselves. This is an issue because this can lead to mental problems or problems such as anorexia which will harm the young person.
There is a problem on social media with fake news, and it has negative effects as it can alter the views of people. For example during the last US election there was plenty of fake content online for example claiming that Obama was a muslim, this was trying to influence the views of many Americans. Platforms can combat this through enabling people to report content.
Children should also be taught to not post personal information and should be taught not to talk to strangers online, as it can lead to further dangers. This can be combated by teaching children at school internet safety. Information that has credible sources is newsworthy as that is proof of truth. This can be checked through the use of tags for example on the platform twitter
